DOORS & COMMERCIAL ENTRANCES Does your supplier tick all the boxes? GGP speaks to Terry Richardson, managing director of TWR Bifolds, about the four cornerstones of a successful supplier and the investments TWR has made to uphold these. Ask any installer what they want from their supplier and it’s a given you will hear one of the following: quality products, excellent service, competitive prices, fast lead times. Striking a balance between these can be a difficult task; for a supplier to offer all four, sometimes one or two qualities will supersede the rest. However, bi-fold specialist TWR Bifolds, is claiming that a significant number of investments have ensured it can meet all four of these cornerstones as standard. Opportunity in the market The TWR Group started fabricating aluminium and PVC-U windows and doors 14 years ago, with the aim to supply high-quality products to installers in the North East. Two years ago, managing director, Terry Richardson, identified an opportunity in the flourishing residential premium door market and launched TWR Bifolds – a dedicated bi-fold door division – to help installers capitalise on this lucrative market. TWR Bifolds is now one of the UK’s leading suppliers of bi-fold doors, going from a standing start to manufacturing 35 bi-fold doors per week. An industry first In 2014/15, TWR introduced its super-fast colour service, which at the time was a first for the industry. The purchase and build of a stateof the-art powder coating facility at its Sunderland based factory meant that installers could get RAL coloured aluminium bi-fold doors on a six-day lead time, at competitive prices. One step further Terry took this one step further at the start of 2016, when TWR launched its new premium fast-track service. This has allowed installers to achieve a three working day turnaround on any standard RAL colour aluminium bi-fold door – with a six-day lead time being offered on its dual-colour aluminium bi-fold doors – subject to an order form being completed by the installer and a deposit paid. Terry is keen to point out that TWR’s super slick turnaround will not affect the high-quality products or comprehensive customer support that have proved so popular with installers: “It’s the same quality bifold doors but now with even quicker lead times. We understand it won’t be for everyone – and you have to pay a premium for it – but we’re proud to be able to offer this service. “We’re very conscious to keep quality consistent as more orders come in and have made a huge investment in our production to ensure this.” Opening of a second factory TWR also recently acquired a new 25,000ft² site, its second factory, where it will be exclusively manufacturing bi-fold doors. The new site in Peterlee, County Durham, is one of the biggest dedicated bi-fold door manufacturing plants in the UK. It is set to significantly increase TWR’s manufacturing capacity, allowing it to supply increased volumes of quality aluminium bifold doors on an incredibly fast lead time. “Bi-fold doors are still a profitable product for our customers but installers need to ensure they are working with companies that have the knowledge and expertise required to fabricate aluminium,” said Terry. “Otherwise this could lead to problems such as poor quality and slow lead times later on.” Introducing WarmCore TWR is also always looking to add products to its portfolio that are innovative and high-performance; and in line with this, it recently launched WarmCore, the innovative folding sliding door system from Synseal. Featuring a 70mm frame, a multi-chambered PVC-U core and clad in aluminium, WarmCore is designed to significantly out-perform the polyamide thermal breaks commonly used to reduce the threat of cold bridging on aluminium windows and doors. According to Terry, this expansion of its range allows TWR to continue offering installers the latest cuttingedge products: “Installers want a premium product, but they also want variety. We identify the most lucrative markets for installers and bring in the products to satisfy these.” The full package Under Terry’s leadership, and with a talented senior management and factory team, TWR has established itself as one of the country’s leading medium-sized fabricators. Terry concludes: “We don’t want to focus on one aspect and let others fall by the wayside. Our three day turnaround is an incredible achievement and gives installers a significant advantage over the competition. “But we want installers to know we are also an experienced familyrun firm who can offer the full package, and we are constantly improving on every aspect of the business.” 38 www.ggpmag.com August 2016
