Energy Efficiency The importance of being environmental The Veka UK Group claims to stand at the forefront of environmental issues, from the world's first purpose built PVC-U recycling plant, to the UK's first BFRC 'A' rated window and now an award winning carbon saving. Sales and marketing director, Colin Torley, explains why minimising environmental impact is of the utmost importance. Our latest accomplishment, for which we have recently won an award, is one we are especially proud of. Since 2008, The Veka UK Group has saved an estimated 12,448 tonnes of carbon emissions, as a result of the various energy saving measures we have put in place. Impressively, 10,240 of this total was saved in 2012/13 alone. These methods of improving our environmental performance resulted in us winning the trophy for the 'Energy Efficiency for a Large Company' Award at the recent Groundwork Pennine Lancashire Business Awards. It's fantastic to be recognised by our own county for our environmental efforts – The Veka UK Group works tirelessly to reduce its carbon footprint, so to win this award really is a great achievement. This is the second time the Groundwork Pennine Lancashire Business Awards has rewarded us for our contribution to 26 December 2013 environmental initiatives. In 2012 we were presented with the trophy for the 'Environmental Innovation' Award, thanks to our state of the art SmartSash window system and the Bowater Architectural System 10 aluminium offering. This year, the judges were impressed with our demonstration of significant improvement in reducing energy use, thanks to what we believe are innovative and exemplary approaches. Some of the measures we implemented included switching our extrusion line motors from DC to AC, fitting variable speed compressors on air lines on extrusion tables, modifying cooling towers and implementing an energy management system to give us an instant record of the electricity consumed on every machine across every area of the factory. To achieve carbon savings of 5,120 tonnes per annum in 2012/13, we installed a new, more efficient compressor and ducted the heat it gives off to heat part of the factory, as well as installing new roof lights to reduce the amount of lighting we use on site. Solar panels have also been installed on the roof to heat water used in the factory's toilets. At The Veka UK Group we are no stranger to leading the way for environmental awareness, having won a number of awards for our green efforts. 2012 was an especially successful year for us in terms of environmental recognition, with four prestigious gongs including 'Energy Efficiency Initiative of the Year' at the G12 awards. Quality windows Thanks to this impressive carbon saving, we were shortlisted for the 'Environmental Initiative of the Year' prize at the 2013 G13 awards. Yes, we may already have a string of environmental awards under our belt, but we will never rest on our laurels, and continue to push the boundaries when it comes to new and innovative ways to be as energy efficient as possible. We have always firmly believed that making quality windows needn't cost the earth, and we strive to innovate in our products and operations to ensure we operate in the most environmentally responsible way that we can. “We are no stranger to leading the way for environmental issues” Rebecca Mayhew-Clegg and Shane Gray from The Veka UK group are presented with environmental efficiency award
