90 MACHINERY Biesse invests in UK facility GGP talks to Intermac UK’s business manager, Chris Arend, about how the Biesse Group has grown significantly in the UK over the last 10 years, and how the company is planning a to invest in a larger UK facility, a move that will allow it to accommodate a showroom for GGP: The last 10 years have seen significant growth for the Biesse Group in the UK, with staff numbers increasing from 36 to 84 between 2006 and 2016, and turnover increasing from £10m to £30m in the same period. Could you comment on that success? CA: As a business we made an investment into a more dedicated sales force, and increased the numbers of sales personnel. We have one very simple rule; if we have competitors and they are selling then we still have a market to attack. GGP: You’ve announced that installed machines in the UK have increased “The UK market has always been seen as very strong – and one that is always keen to significantly in the UK in the last 12 months, with 19 installations in October last year alone. Business is obviously booming, so how are the next 12 months looking and are you expecting much of an impact from the forthcoming Brexit negotiations? CA: We continue to grow and we have a very aggressive budget set this year, which is an increase from last year. We see the UK market as strong and growing. As for Brexit fears, these seem to have been quickly forgotten and the market has responded well, so we expect to see continued growth. GGP: Another recent announcement is that there are plans to invest in a larger facility in the UK, which is scheduled to open in 2018. Could you tell us more about the reasons behind this investment? CA: Yes, we have invested a significant amount in the new facility – an amount that will certainly be in excess of £1million – and this is part of a larger global investment from the Biesse Group, with similar projects also planned in our other subsidiaries from Turkey, to Dubai and Australia. All Biesse subsidiaries include a technical and training centre, which is unique amongst our competitors in the UK, but the investment is designed to expand on this in order for us to accommodate the Intermac product range, and to generate a much better customer experience locally. GGP: Such an investment appears to show a lot of confidence in the UK market wouldn’t you say? From your perspective, how does the UK fenestration market compare to Europe or the rest of the world? CA: The UK market has always been seen as very strong – and one that is always keen to invest in technology. We are certainly embracing the Industrial Revolution 4.0! GGP: The Biesse Group’s product range is hugely impressive, but what machines are proving to be the most popular in the UK market? CA: The Intermac Master range is the number one CNC machining centre in the world, and has proven to be extremely popular in the UK – for the simple reason that it is born on reliability, ease of use and repeated accuracy. GGP: And finally, how would you forecast the UK glazing industry in the short to medium term? CA: Having read a number of articles, it appears the market is set to increase 5-6% year on year for the next five years.
