EDITOR’S COMMENT Of the 40 plus industry leaders, movers and shakers that have kindly contributed to our New Year’s Message feature this month, the vast majority have confessed that 2014 was a great year – and most are very much looking forward to more of the same in 2015 as well. There is possibly a slight air of uncertainty among one or two of our experts thanks to the general election in May, but as a rule, the overall forecast is very cheery indeed. And in addition to the thoughts of the industry at large, we also have two in-depth surveys in this month’s magazine, the third annual Emplas State of The Market Report on page 76 and the Consumer Protection Association’s (CPA) ‘installer barometer’ on page 40. The Emplas report suggests that, after the initial explosion of optimism that accompanied the start of the upturn in 2013, the industry may have started to ‘sober up’ as we head into 2015 – an idea that’s backed up by statistics that reveal only 63% of those polled believe that the industry would sustain growth this year, compared to 98% for 2014. Whether this is a sign that growth is levelling off to more ‘normal’ levels, or whether it is the start of something more sinister, we will have to wait and see. As for what areas of the market will be the most prosperous in the coming months, once again it is composite doors and foils that are the big hitters, followed by patio doors and bi-folds. Remember all that fuss about triple glazing last year? Well, according to Emplas, 92% of those responding to its survey said that triple glazing sales had accounted for less than 5% of turnover in 2014, with only 3% saying that it accounted for a tenth of more of sales. Furthermore, 67% said that triple glazing sales would never exceed double glazing… Of the 12,000 installers polled by ‘industry market intelligence expert’, Insight Data, for the CPA, the general mood was also upbeat for 2015. An overwhelming majority expected sales and profits to increase and over half predicted sustained growth across the industry at large. So, with that in mind, I hope you enjoy the launch issue of the new look GGP magazine and I wish you a happy and prosperous 2015!
