NEW YEAR MESSAGES
2019 is set to be a pivotal
year for the industry,
with prices and costs at
the very core of it. We
will see increased financial pressures from
living wage rises, currency fluctuations, the uncertainty of Brexit
and the spiralling cost of raw materials.
With the living wage going up we’ll have increased labour
costs, which will impact on all parts of the supply chain.
Meanwhile, glass shortages have led to an increase in prices as
demand outstrips supply.
With the price of resin and steel also increasing, this causes
issues for system houses and fabricators alike. The fear of the
unknown has already led to some companies increasing their
prices to cover themselves, and in order to safeguard their
Price rises seem inevitable but we will all have some strategic
decisions to make in how we address this. There are only so many
costs that can be absorbed, and to maintain current margins all
or part of these will have to passed on to the homeowner. Either
way, sales and profits for the majority of the industry are likely to
remain flat for 2019.

Glazerite has always been a company to leverage its value
offering rather than using discounted pricing and this is
something we strongly encourage through our customer base.
Reducing eroding margins further helps no-one in the long run,
but the added value we can give to our installers, through support
with their marketing and other business functions, is what will
help them to build a strong and sustainable business.
In the same respect, we give our installers all we can to sell the
enhanced benefits available to them from the premium suppliers
we work with. These include enhanced security from Ultion,
Maco and ERA through to attractive and innovative hardware
offerings, like the fully suited Sweet range from Brisant Secure we
launched last September.
Homeowners are much less driven by price nowadays and
would much rather have a differentiated product with a great
finish that will last them for years to come.
Despite the uncertainty 2019 brings, we have a strong
investment programme planned at Glazerite which will flow into
and enhance all areas of our business.
We are confident of another positive year for the group and
can’t wait to get started.
We’re entering 2019,
as a nation, into
the unknown. While
2018 meant raw material
increases, and a fluctuating pound, we’re
now waiting to find out ‘Deal, or No Deal’ – and there’s no Noel
Edmunds calling the banker to bail us out!
In 2019, consumer confidence in the housing market may
slow even further, with homeowners choosing to invest in their
current property rather than move.
This is good news for both suppliers and installers. In 2018,
we diversified and increased our range of aspirational products
for the RMI sector – such as solutions for popular aluminium
bi-folds in Clearspan or the Invisifold system for doors and
Lift-and-slide doors are also growing in popularity, across
PVC-U, aluminium and timber, so the introduction of our new
Greenteq Aspire handle, designed for even the heaviest door
sashes, has been a great success.
More good news – construction output is due to grow 2.3%
in 2019 – and this means more new homes that must meet
Document Q specifications.
Many fabricators now work to standardised specification to
guarantee compliancy – and VBH can help more manufacturers
be Document Q ready in 2019.
We expect the flush sash market to continue to grow – and so
will relevant hardware just as ‘heritage’ multipoint door locks
– a modern secure lock with a shoulder-level key to mimic the
hardware on old timber doors.
Or, if you’re an installer that has ‘standard’ doors and
windows as your bread and butter, offering hardware upgrades,
such as the Coastline range for anti-corrosion, or for enhanced
security, a TS007 greenteQ Alpha 2* handle combined with a
Q-Star 1* cylinder is a great way to upsell with 3* security. Our
Q-secure hardware guarantee will also help to close sales.
We want to capitalise on our win as Component Supplier
of The Year at the G Awards, and ‘Team VBH’ will start 2019
energised, motivated and is eager to go that extra mile to make
fabricators’ and installers’ jobs easier.
We love to hear from customers, whether via phone, email
or social media – with both the customer service and technical
teams available for queries.
