Double R wins
glass company
of the year
Double R Glass & Roo ng
Systems won Glass Company
of the Year at the industry’s
prestigious G18 Awards.
“We couldn’t be prouder of
the entire team at Double R
for achieving this award,” said
Ian Sims, managing director.
“We took home the top prize
for signi cant investment in
the business, including the
rst vertical Super Spacer
automatic hot melt IGU
line in the world, and then
growing our sales to ll
this new capacity. All while
continuing to offer the same
high levels of service our
existing customers have come
to expect. It hasn’t always
been an easy road, but our
dedicated staff across the
entire business have done an
outstanding job of adapting
to new processes, while
continuing to deliver on our
service promises.
“The glass sector has
seen some negative press
in recent months, but our
focus hasn’t faltered – we
work hard with the help of
our key partner suppliers to
deliver high quality products,
when our customers need
them. We’ve developed long
standing relationships with
many of our fabricator and
installer customers because
we genuinely try to put
their needs rst. Even when
something goes wrong, we’ll
try and put it right rst and
ask questions later.
“To receive such recognition
for our quality focused
approach is a fantastic
endorsement of the way we
operate at Double R, and we
will continue to work hard to
ensure we remain worthy of
the title, Glass Company of the
Year, for years to come.”
Following impressive growth and
as part of a long-term strategy to
increase production capacity, glass
processing specialist, TuffX, has
announced that it has expanded its
Knowsley manufacturing facility.
The Merseyside based company
has recently taken on an additional
20,000ft2 unit, that adjoins
its existing 55,000ft2 factory,
creating an impressive 75,000ft2
space dedicated to quality glass
manufacture.
This extra space will house one of
the company’s three laminating lines
alongside a third, additional glass
cutting line, a second digital printing
machine and a new state of the art
Bovone ELB 12 HS straight line
edging machine.
The £200,000 Bovone straight
line edger is the second machine
of its type at TuffX and is designed
to produce fl at and arisse profi le.
Capable of processing four metres
of glass a minute, it will allow TuffX
to stay ahead of anticipated future
demand by producing a greater
volume of product, while still
retaining a market leading quality
of fi nish.
As well as the new machinery and
additional laminating and cutting
lines, the expanded factory will
also enable TuffX to optimise the
layout of its existing facilities, not
to mention create space for more
glass cutting equipment in the near
future.
TuffX operations director,
John Tierney, commented: “The
addition of almost 50% more
space is fantastic news for TuffX as
not only does it allow us to house
new machinery, but it gives us the
perfect opportunity to re-organise
the current factory layout so that we
can be as effi cient as possible. We’ve
been gearing up for growth and we
now have the infrastructure in place
to be able to deliver on expected
demand going forward.”
Six months after the relaunch of
the Planitherm Network by Saint-
Gobain Building Glass, one installer
has reported that it is enjoying a
‘quiet success’.
The Planitherm Network is
designed to help fabricators and
installers to win more business by
upselling to homeowners based on
the comfort benefi ts of different
types of Planitherm glass such
as enhanced security, reduced
overheating, noise reduction,
energy effi ciency and furniture fade
protection.
Mark Pearce, managing director
at KJM Group, said: “I was really
impressed with the marketing
material and website available to
Planitherm Network members
and it has helped me to explain
the benefi ts of the different types
of glass to my customers in plain
English. One recent example has
been a customer who lives on a busy
road and on the Heathrow fl ight
path, so noise was a big problem.
“We were contacted to provide
a quotation for secondary glazing
for the main bedrooms via email.
A price was sent for 8.8mm SGG
acoustic secondary glazing plus a
quotation for one small new primary
window with Comfort Plus glass.
This was duly accepted, and a survey
arranged. Whilst there we advised
that the existing windows were in
poor condition as they were leaking
sound and air.
“The secondary was installed, and
an order placed for new primary
windows with Comfort Plus glass.
These have been installed and the
outcome beyond the customer’s
belief.
“They have since placed an order
for more windows with Comfort
Plus. Silence is golden!”
