SENIOR ON A MISSION WITH CHURCH RENOVATION
High performance aluminium curtain
walling, doors and windows from Senior
Architectural Systems have helped
transform a derelict Victorian school
into a bright and modern place of
worship in the heart of Sheffield.
The Mission Hub is a part of the
Catholic Diocese of Hallam and the old
school building has been reimagined
by Jump Architects to provide a flexible
and functional space that comprises
places to socialise, study and reflect.
LIGHT SPACE CREATED FOR LAUNCH PAD VISITOR AREA
The National Space Centre Visitor
attraction opened its doors to visitors in
the summer of . Since then it has
gone on to increase its visitor numbers
year on year, now recording in excess of
, visitors each year.
In 8, work was undertaken to
build and open the ‘Launch Pad’; a new
visitor area which was to incorporate a
bright and welcoming entrance hall and
ticketing area along with an exhibition
and education space to allow more
STEM teaching facilities. The 8m2
project was designed by architect Pick
Everard. The investment of over £m
included the creation of an entrance
hall capped with a new oval feature
illuminated Velux Xtralite rooflight
which gives a view upwards to the
Rocket Tower; the identifiable feature of
the visitor attraction.
The thermally enhanced Xtralite
X-Span self-supporting bespoke shaped
oval monopitch rooflight was pitched at
a minimum °. An overall size of 6m x
.6m resulted in an internal span size of
.m x .m which was manufactured
in six separate facetted bays and was
installed in builder’s upstands pitched
Senior supplied the full fenestration
package for the new church, with the
fabrication and installation undertaken
by supply chain partner, Allied Glazing
Systems for main contractor T & C
Williams. The original building, which
dates back to 86, has been renovated
throughout and features Senior’s
SPW6 aluminium windows and
SPW aluminium commercial doors.
The arched windows of the former
school have been given a new lease of
life, with Senior’s slim-profile window
system adapted to replicate the look of
a traditional steel window. To provide
the users of the church with additional
space and to flood the interior with
natural light, Senior’s thermallyenhanced
SF aluminium curtain wall
system has been used to create a link
between the old building and the new
purpose-built extension.
Said to be highly durable and
providing a low-maintenance solution,
at °. The rooflight was completed
with .mm double glazed units
which comprised of an 6mm outer leaf
with Guardian Sunguard SN /
toughened glass, a cavity of 6mm
argon filled with black spacer bar, and
an inner leaf measuring ¡.mm of clear
laminated glass with a . mm pvb
interlayer.
The glazing specification was
particularly enhanced with the inclusion
of Guardian Sunguard, a neutral blue
glass which allows high levels of natural
light penetration whilst achieving a low
solar heat gain and reducing the need
for additional artificial light.
This helps with visitor comfort levels
and also makes the building more
energy efficient, negating the need
for excessive additional heating and
cooling.
