NHSM returns to highlight the
importance of making homes secure
Paul Atkinson, sales and commercial director for Yale Door and Window
Solutions, discusses this year’s campaign theme for National Home Security
month and how you can make the most of the initiative to maximise sales.
Yale is proud to be sponsoring National
Home Security month for its eighth
year. The campaign, which raises
awareness of home security and the
latest products available to help combat breakins,
will run throughout October.
Figures show that burglaries spike by as much
as % in the autumn and winter month. On
bonfi re night for instance, stats reveal a %
increase in burglaries over an ordinary autumn
In response, this year NHSM is themed ‘You
call it home, we keep it secure’, and will highlight
a different element of home security each week
of the campaign. It will offer advice, break
down technical jargon, and debunk myths for
homeowners across the UK, all helping to drive
demand for security products and installation
Week one of the campaign, dubbed ‘You call
it home, we keep it locked’, in particular presents
a prime opportunity for door fabricators and
installers, as it takes a deep dive into door locks.
The focus will be on how products, including
composite doors and smart locking mechanisms,
can make it more diffi cult for intruders to enter
a property, while security standards, such as the
Kitemark, will also be explored.
This provides an ideal opportunity to up-sell
British Standard security locking solutions to
customers, such as the Yale Platinum Star
cylinder, Platinum Star cylinder pull, and the
Postmaster Professional TS8 letterplate as
part of PAS .
Week four’s ‘You call it home, we keep it
smart’, is all about smart technology. Alarms,
security lights and cameras will all come under
the spotlight, as will the latest security gadgets,
from smart door locks to integrated virtual
assistants. The campaign will also offer advice on
how an effi cient security ecosystem can be put
More and more homeowners are demanding
and investing in smart security devices that
can be controlled remotely via a smartphone.
However, they often want a trade professional
to install devices for them. This week will
provide information to customers on the
benefi ts of smart security and gives installers
a great opportunity to capitalise on a growing
Other areas being highlighted by NHSM
this October include a focus on CCTV, alarm
systems, and dark nights as the clocks go back.
For those fabricators, distributors and
installers that sign up to support NHSM, you
will be provided with a range of promotional
collateral and marketing materials that can be
distributed to customers and used online and
in-store to help raise awareness and boost
Yale is also offering a £, guarantee in
the unlikely event that a forced break in is due
to the Platinum Star cylinder being snapped
under attack to gain entry to the property.
This guarantee provides ultimate peace of
mind to homeowners and in turn, fabricators,
distributors, and installers.
The Yale Platinum Star cylinder provides
maximum security against known attack
methods; cylinders can be suited and re-pinned
at Yale’s BSI audited plant in the Midlands
thus retaining the Kitemark accreditation
across the suite. The Star cylinder has been
independently tested by BSI to be awarded
the British Kitemarked TS: Star
accreditation – a standard developed in response
to concerns around cylinder attacks.
In addition, the Star cylinder is SS Sold
Secured accredited. It has also been tested to
the British Standard BS EN: and is
Secured by Design approved – meaning it could
save homeowners money when it comes to
renewing their insurance premiums.
