Research from Technavio has reportedly revealed the global aluminium extrusion market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 6% during the period 2016 – 2020. The Global Aluminium Market 2016 – 2020 Report predicts rapid growth in this market during the forecast period due to demand from many applications, especially in the building and construction industry; with the report saying that Europe and the UK will benefit from this increase in demand. Aluminium is used in many building and construction applications, such as window and door frames, panels and curtain walling. And with the global construction market expected to reach approximately $12 trillion by 2020, increasing residential and non-residential projects in this sector will drive up demand for aluminium. Managing director of CDW Systems, Jerry Webb, who has publicly advocated for more use of aluminium in construction, commented: “At CDW we have kept a close eye on aluminium in construction and the trends in this market. Our own research coincides with this report and suggests that aluminium is due a revolution. “We were one of the first to identify a domestic renaissance in aluminium.

As a material, it is now on a par with PVC-U when it comes to energy efficiency, and its endearing qualities such as slim sightlines and good looks remain. “We’re also seeing a trend of replacement windows installed in the 1980s being replaced again – this time with aluminium as the material of choice. It’s happening and our customers are amongst the beneficiaries.” Technavio’s aluminium report also predicted that a large percentage of aluminium extruded between 2016 and 2020 will be coloured. The market for anodised aluminium grew by 28,000 metric tons in 2015 from 2014 and is expected to reach 6.68 million metric tons by 2020. The market for powder coated aluminium is experiencing a massive demand and is expected to reach 3.61 million metric tons by 2020. While coloured aluminium products have long been used in the commercial construction market, sales of coloured aluminium windows and doors in the domestic market have risen recently as homeowner tastes evolve beyond standard white PVC-U. Jerry commented: “The report shows there is a world outside of the EU and a prosperous one at that. There are a wealth of opportunities in aluminium and we will continue to champion its use and support our customers in taking advantage of this lucrative market.”
