Interest in home extensions surges

Interest in extensions, garden rooms, home offices and annexes has surged by a fifth in the last week as people working from home for the first time realise they need more space, says modular house-builder, Built & Spaces.

Large numbers of inquiries have reportedly come from parents anticipating trying to work while their children are off school because of coronavirus.

Built & Spaces uses a component-led system that works around off-the-shelf parts and minimises waste during manufacture and construction.

Built & Spaces, based in Plymouth, Devon, claims that its unique system reduces the amount of building required on-site, and can allow a garden room to be erected within two weeks of the design process beginning.

Steve Wilkie, director, commented: “We’re seeing interest in house extensions rocketing as more and more people work from home — enquiries were up 20% last week.

“People are asking about home offices, garden rooms, granny annexes, extensions and pool rooms. Some of them are just desperate to get away from their partners and children!

“People are suddenly working from home, looking around and they’re thinking, ‘I need more space.’ Homeowners might have been thinking about extending their house for years, but now they’ve got time to do something about it.”
