“Let’s talk about burnout”

A business’ health depends on successfully managing the risk of burnout, according to Jon Vanstone, chair of Certass Trade Association, who points out the warning signs.

Burnout is characterised by chronic stress, constant fatigue, negativity towards work and declining productivity. It can affect everyone, from employees to the business owner.

“Warning signs to watch for include heightened irritability, as fatigue can wear down a person’s patience,” said Jon. “If employees react disproportionately to others, or the team leader overreacts to minor issues, burnout could be looming.

“Taking breaks might seem a luxury to a small business leader but it’s essential for maintaining mental health. When team members continually push their limits, focussing on remaining productive to meet seemingly impossible deadlines or client expectations, burnout might be near.

“Like a frequently used axe that dulls with overuse, the human mind also needs rest to maintain efficiency.

“A culture that encourages time away helps employees to regain the perspective needed to help manage stress better and to maintain work efficiency when they return.

“To embed this culture, the business owner must model the behaviour, taking time off to show the team that it’s not just allowed but expected. Pressure is a constant. But how it’s managed matters.

“I have long been an admirer and promoter of the work of the Lighthouse Club charity, which continues to achieve more, year upon year, for the betterment of the health of construction workers and their families.”

The charity’s 24/7 helpline offers free and confidential support and advice on a variety of wellbeing issues. The charity’s text service can be accessed by texting ‘HARDHAT” to 85258 in the UK or 50808 in the Republic of Ireland.

Jon concluded: “Put simply, look after the mental health of everyone involved in your business. The business’ health depends upon it.”
