Pure luxury

Aluminium fenestration solutions from Senior Architectural Systems have helped ‘breathe new life’ into the recently refurbished Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire.

The Grade II listed building has been sympathetically repaired, renovated and extended to provide luxury hotel accommodation and a new build spa and wellness retreat. The contract, which is reportedly one of the largest engineering projects to be completed in the North of England, saw Senior’s aluminium curtain walling, windows and doors fabricated and installed by supply chain partner, Aire Valley Architectural Aluminium, for main contractor R N Wooler and Bowman Riley architects.

A key challenge of the project was to minimise the impact of the new extension on the existing listed building which dates back to the 17th century.

With all the original windows in the hall restored to their former glory, it was vital that the fenestration package in the new spa building was appropriate in terms of both aesthetics and performance. The slim sightlines offered by Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain wall are said to have provided the ideal solution and were complemented by Senior’s high-performance SPW501 commercial doors and patented low ‘U’ value Pure aluminium windows.

Following the construction programme, both Grantley Hall and the new spa building have achieved carbon neutral status. Key to this was the installation of a ground source heat recovery system, with the thermal performance of Senior’s aluminium fenestration products also helping to contribute to the overall energy-efficiency of the scheme.

Senior says that it has invested heavily in this product range to offer specifiers a range of solutions that not only meet current building regulations and energy-efficiency targets but can exceed them. In addition to the slim profile SF52 aluminium curtain wall system which offers high thermal performance, Senior adds that it is also the only UK-based manufacturer to have harnessed the potential of expanded polyurethane (PUR) as a thermal barrier in aluminium doors and windows. Through the creation of the Pure system, which Senior holds a UK patent for, some of the lowest possible ‘U’ values can be achieved and carbon calculations significantly reduced. Products within the Pure range include a variety of different window types, from traditional casement and tilt and turn to reversible overswing and parallel push styles, and a choice of door options including the bi-folding Pure Fold, the patio style Pure Slide and the new Pure Commercial door.
