Lumi lights up Grand Designs Live

Manufacturer of composite door sets, Apeer, has reported a ‘phenomenal’ response to the launch of its ‘ground breaking’ new structurally bonded window and door glazing system at Grand Designs Live (May 2-10, ExCeL, London).

Incorporating ‘frameless’ windows, doors, entrance glazing, French doors and a bi-fold door system, the ‘radically styled’, triple glazed Lumi collection is distinguished by its fused ceramic colour border, which is available in eight different exterior colours and eight further interior finishes.

Lumi, with its ‘endless light’ concept and seamless aesthetics, came about after Apeer MD, Asa McGillian, was inspired to ‘re-launch the white window’ and design ‘something different’ for his own home. The product has been in development for more than two-and-a-half years and represents an investment of nearly a £1m for the company.

Asa said: “I knew that if we were going to enter the windows market I wanted to do it with a radically different product – one that would offer an alternative to anything else out there and appeal to consumers looking for the kind of cutting edge design with which they could make a lifestyle statement.

“What we have done is apply our leading edge technology skills to the windows sector to offer homeowners an exciting new alternative to PVC, hardwood, timber-aluminium composites and powder-coated aluminium options.”

Asa confirmed that business on day one and two of the exhibition had been ‘amazing’, adding: “It was our objective to get 10 orders and we’ve probably already done that, with days still to go… We even had one lady from Cornwall who decided to cancel an order she currently had in place for some aluminium windows, after falling in love with Lumi.

“The response has been brilliant. It’s so refreshing to hear such positive comments.”

One visitor, who gave his name as Kevin, also expressed his delight with Lumi. “It’s very impressive,” he said. “It’s a good looking system that is virtually maintenance free – I like the way the glass on the outside is flush and covering the frame, making it easier to clean. I also like the wide opening aspect from a safety perspective… Most of all [Lumi] just has a ‘different’ look to it, which I really like.”

Available in a full suite of matching designs, Lumi offers performance benefits including:

  • Stormproof design with flush proportional glazing (the double rebate is completely hidden).
  • 50mm triple glazed (6-4-4) toughened glass for maximum insulation and noise reduction.
  • 80mm GRP double rebate frame offers exceptional ‘U’ values as low as 0.7w/m2k on fixed glazing panels.
  • Triple gasket seal.
  • Double euro groove allows for versatile hardware options, concealed hinges and window locks.
  • High security Winkhaus lock system.
  • Fab & Fix hardware.
  • Variable clear glazing options.
  • Concealed hinges offer smooth action, high weight load opening and wide opening.
