Training funds unaffected by green scheme cancellation

Funding provided for industry skills and training is unaffected by the cancellation of the UK’s Green Homes voucher scheme, the Building Our Skills campaign has been advised. Building Our Skills exists to attract young and new people to the fenestration industry.

John Ogilvie, Building Our Skills’ ambassador, said: “I think there had been a feeling for some time that the Green Homes Scheme was not delivering as had been originally hoped. It was a concern to hear it had been cancelled, as a big part of it was a commitment from the department for business, energy and industrial strategy to upskill the nation’s tradespeople on the back of it. We were therefore delighted to receive immediate confirmation that the funding element for skills training is unaffected, and in fact, that there is the potential for further commitment towards training and helping to raise standards in the future.”

Building Our Skills has been proactively promoting practical installer training since January, which is fully accredited by GQA Qualifications, the fenestration industry’s leading awarding body. “GQA shares our delight in knowing we still have funded training in place to help skill new and existing workforce,” John continued. “The number of applicants received, even against the background of the lockdown, clearly demonstrates there is a desire in the industry for upskilling at installer level.”

Training offered by Building Our Skills is 100% fully funded and represents a great opportunity for younger installers, those newer to the industry, and those who are fitter’s mates to expand their practical knowledge.
